Annette Kellermann
Annette Kellermann (1887-1975)
Photographed by Orval Hixon (1921)
Annette was crippled as a child and had to wear heavy metal leg braces. Her parents had her take up swimming to develop upper body strength and exercise her legs. She became a swimming sensation and by 1905 held several woman’s word records. She was fearless and a great entertainer. Billed as “The Diving Venus” and the “Australian Mermaid”, Kellermann performed diving and swimming feats for a rapt audience. She high kicked her way through the social barriers of the Victorian era, paving the way for women to compete in Australia and international sports. She tried to swim the English Channel 3 times.
She moved to America and began diving in an aquatic tank at circus like vaudeville shows in order to earn money for herself and her ageing father.
What made her famous was the one piece bathing suit. Annette was arrested on a Boston beach in 1907 for wearing a one piece bathing suit. Kellermann won the trial. She brought out her own line of less restrictive swimwear.
She became a champion for swimming in less restrictive clothing for women during the time that women wore pantaloons and a dress to swim. She told a reporter “I can’t swim wearing more stuff than you hang on your clothesline.” Kellermann has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Annette was the sister of cinematographer Maurice Kellermann.
A movie was made about her life called The Million Dollar Mermaid and stared Esther Williams.
